Its the main island of the northern
lagoon. it was transformed in the 19th century filling up a canal to enlarge
the square named after the composer B. Galuppi (1706-1785), and building several houses on
agricultural land without changing the landscape or the spirit of the island. The Parish
Church of S. Martin, built in the 16th century, contains a vast
painting by Tiepolo and it is visible thanks to the high, elegant bell-tower designed by
Tirali, which is very much leaning to one side and was reinforced during demanding
restorations.
At the Scuola del Merletto some laces made between the end of the 19th
century and the beginning of the 20th century are exhibited, but there are also
some 18th century laces worked by bobbin (Piazza Galuppi, weekdays: from 9.00
to 18.00, on Sunday from 10.00 to 16.00) . |
